The main purpose of Sweet Adelines International is education of members in the art of singing four-part harmony, barbershop style.

If you want to improve your singing abilities and learn a cappella harmony barbershop style, Sweet Adelines International offers the most comprehensive, quality education available anywhere in the world.

Gateway Chorus provides access to leading experts in the areas of vocal production, choreography, stage direction, costuming, stage makeup, judging, teaching (faculty), chorus management, arranging, directing, personal growth and leadership. Together, our teams of international educators have created effective programs designed to help every woman achieve success.

Along with "in-rehearsal" vocal instruction, warm-up, and education; Gateway Chorus holds coaching weekends and retreats with specialists from around the organization, and around the world! At these sessions, the coaches assist Gateway members with both individual vocal cues, but also with overall chorus sound and helping the chorus achieve their goals and move forward to greater achievements.

Currently, Gateway's main coach is Sandy Marron (bio below). Additional coaching faculty that Gateway is excited and proud to be working with in this 2009/2010 season includes Kim Hulbert, Kathy Carmody, Lori Lyford, and Marcia Pinvidic.

Barbershop Basics

Watch and Learn
Four-part, unaccompanied, close-harmony singing, with melody in the second voice, called the "lead." Sung in the range between A below middle C, and C above middle C. Tenor is a harmony part sung consistently above the lead. Although tenor is the highest voice in barbershop harmony, it should not be confused with the soprano of conventional singing groups. The tenor should have a light, sweet, pure tone that will complement but not overpower the lead voice. Baritone covers approximately the same range as lead. The baritone harmony notes cross the lead notes; sometimes sung below and sometimes above. Bass singers should have a rich, mellow voice and be able to sing the E flat below middle C easily. Bass should not be confused with the alto of conventional groups.
